What Is the Lenny Face?

Quick answer: the Lenny face ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) is a text face with raised eyebrows, round eyes, and a crooked smirk. It hints at something mischievous, suggestive, or knowing- the online version of a raised eyebrow and a sly grin.

It is also searched as lenny emoji, lenny emote, lenny face ascii, and copy-paste lenny. None of these is an official emoji; the face is assembled from a handful of Unicode characters and accent marks.

Lenny is one face among 1,200+ kaomoji on our main page.

This page collects more than 60 versions, from the winking ( ͡~ ͜ʖ ͡°) and the money-eyed ( ͡$ ͜ʖ ͡$) to Lenny with sunglasses, Lenny with arms, and bear Lenny. The maker above the cards lets you swap every part and repeat the face into an army or the famous nested Lennypede.

How Is ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) Built?

Part	Character	Unicode name
Eyebrows	͡	Combining double inverted breve, drawn over the next character
Eyes	°	Degree sign
Smile under the nose	͜	Combining double breve below
Nose and mouth	ʖ	Latin letter inverted glottal stop
Head	( )	Ordinary brackets, plus spaces for balance

Because the brows and the smile are combining marks, they attach to whatever sits beside them. That is why Lenny can look perfect in one font and slightly off in another: each font decides how high to draw the accents.

Where Did the Lenny Face Come From?

The face spread from the imageboard 4chan in 2012, where users started posting it as a reaction under suggestive or absurd threads. The name Lenny stuck soon after, although nobody agrees on exactly why. From there it moved to Reddit, Twitch chat, and gaming forums, gaining spin-offs such as the Lenny shrug, the money Lenny, and the Lennypede, a chain of faces nested inside each other.

What Is a Lennypede and How Do You Make One?

A Lennypede is a column of Lenny faces tucked inside one another so the eyes and smirks overlap, like ( ͡°( ͡° ͜ʖ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)ʖ ͡°) ͡°). Writing one by hand means tracking a lot of brackets. In the Lenny Face Maker, set Repeat to Lennypede, choose 2 to 7 layers with the slider, and copy. Choose Lenny army instead for a simple row of faces side by side.

What Does a Lenny Face Mean in Chat?

I have a plan, and you will probably not like it.

Smug approval

A knowing nod to a clever move, in games and in life.

Pure meme

Often used for no reason at all, just to be silly.

Because of the suggestive reading, keep Lenny out of work chats and replies to people who might take it the wrong way.

Why Does My Lenny Face Look Wrong?

Problem	Cause	Fix
Eyebrows float to the side	The font places combining marks differently	Try another font, or copy a version without brows
The face is lopsided	A space was removed when pasting	Copy the whole card again rather than retyping
Part of it turned into italics	Markdown read an underscore or asterisk	Set Paste into to Discord or Reddit
An app said the name is invalid	Combining marks are banned in many usernames	Use it in posts and bios instead

Combining marks also power glitch text, which stacks them far beyond Lenny.
