What Is a Japanese Font Generator?

Quick answer: a Japanese font generator makes text look Japanese. It does this in two ways: by swapping English letters for similar-shaped Japanese and Chinese characters, such as フ卂卩卂几, or by converting romaji, Japanese written in English letters, into real hiragana and katakana, such as にほん and ニホン.

Most “Japanese font” sites only offer the first trick. It looks great in a username or a poster, but a Japanese reader sees a jumble of unrelated symbols, because 卄 means twenty and 尺 is an old unit of length. Hover over any letter in the chart below to learn its real meaning before you post it.

For real Japanese, the romaji converter follows the Hepburn spelling used in textbooks: shi, chi, tsu and fu, double consonants for small っ, a hyphen for the long vowel mark ー, and n for ん. The vertical text maker then sets the result in tategaki columns that read from top to bottom and right to left, the way Japanese books, signs and posters are printed.

How Do You Write in a Japanese-Style Font?

  1. Choose your goal: Japanese-looking English, or real Japanese script.
  2. Type: English words for look-alike letters, romaji for kana.
  3. Pick a style: Kanji-style, kana-style, brackets, kaomoji, or vertical text.
  4. Copy and paste: All characters are standard and work in apps and games.

Japanese Font Generator FAQ

What is a Japanese font generator?

A tool that makes text look Japanese, either with Japanese-looking letters or by converting romaji into real hiragana and katakana.

Are the Japanese-looking letters real Japanese?

They are real characters, but each has its own meaning, so together they are not readable Japanese.

How do I convert my name to katakana?

Type how it sounds in Japanese romaji, for example, a-rekkusu for Alex, and copy the katakana line.

What is romaji?

Japanese written with English letters, such as konnichiwa for こんにちは.

What is the difference between hiragana and katakana?

Both spell sounds; hiragana is used for native words and grammar, and katakana mainly for foreign words and names.

How do I type a long vowel in katakana?

Add a hyphen after the vowel, for example ra-men for ラーメン.

How do I write small tsu っ?

Double the next consonant, as in nippon for にっぽん.

Why did n become ん?

An n before a consonant or at the end of a word is the separate sound ん.

Can I write kanji with this tool?

Kanji depends on meaning, so the tool converts sounds to kana; the aesthetic styles add a few common kanji like 桜 and 夢.

What is tategaki?

Vertical Japanese writing that runs from top to bottom, with columns read from right to left.

Does vertical text work on Instagram?

Yes, as several short lines, though spacing can shift in apps without Japanese fonts.

Will a game or chat app accept kana in my nickname?

Most apps accept kana and look-alike letters; a few games only allow basic Latin characters.

What does 卄 mean?

It is a Chinese character meaning twenty, chosen here only because it resembles H.

What are Japanese brackets called?

「」 are kagikakko, corner brackets used like quotation marks, and 【】 are sumitsukikakko, lenticular brackets.

What is half-width katakana?

Narrow katakana from early computers, like カタカナ, now used for a retro look.

Is full-width text Japanese?

Full-width letters come from Japanese typesetting, where Latin letters were drawn as wide as kanji.

What is a kaomoji?

A Japanese emoticon read upright, such as (◕‿◕), using kana and symbols.

Which romaji spelling does the converter use?

Hepburn, the textbook standard, with common alternatives such as si and tu also understood.

Will Japanese characters show as boxes?

Rarely. Kana and these look-alike letters are covered by the fonts on current phones and computers.

Is my text saved?

No. Kana and vertical columns are produced on your device, so your words stay private.

Is the Japanese font generator free?

Yes. The converter, both alphabets, the vertical maker, and all styles cost nothing.

Every Japanese bracket pair, from 「」 to 〖〗, is listed with its name in our bracket and boxed text tool.
