How Flag Emojis Are Built

There is no single character for each flag. Instead, Unicode has 26 regional indicator letters, and when two of them stand side by side, the device looks up the two-letter ISO country code and draws that country’s flag. England, Scotland and Wales use a longer recipe: a black flag followed by invisible tag letters spelling gbeng, gbsct or gbwls.

Why Windows Shows Letters Instead of Flags

Microsoft’s Segoe UI Emoji font deliberately leaves out country flags, so on Windows 10 and 11, Chrome, Edge, and most desktop apps display a flag as two boxed letters such as PK or US. The flag is still there: send the same text to a phone, a Mac, or Firefox, and it appears as a picture.
